PA DOC: Find or Contact an Inmate (official) (opens in new tab) Pennsylvania facility status

How to search: enter the person's legal last and first name, or their PA DOC ID number if you have it. Nicknames and misspellings usually return nothing; try fewer letters or a different spelling of the name.

What the dates mean: any dates shown, such as admission, sentence or projected release dates, come from PA DOC's own records. Projected dates can change (for example with earned credits, discipline or parole decisions) and are not a guarantee. Ask PA DOC or the facility before making plans around a date.

Release and transfer alerts: Pennsylvania takes part in VINE (official source (opens in new tab)). Families can sign up free on VINELink (opens in new tab) for release, transfer and court-date alerts. It's built mainly for crime victims.

OutSooner does not store or list anyone's name, date of birth or ID number. The search runs on the official site.

Sending money

  • Deposits go through the state's approved provider, which PA DOC lists as JPay: online, by money order with a deposit slip, by walk-in cash through MoneyGram, or at lobby kiosks in each prison.
  • Money orders must be sent to JPay, not to the prison. Do not include personal items; they are thrown away.
  • Limits PA DOC publishes: up to $300 per card every 72 hours; $999.99 per money order; $5,000 per MoneyGram cash transaction.
  • If the person owes fines, costs or restitution, part of each deposit may go to that debt.
  • PA DOC warns: do not send money for an inmate to any other person, website or email account.

Phone calls and video visits

  • To receive calls, create a phone account with the state's approved phone provider, which PA DOC lists as Securus. Save the number in your contacts so calls aren't flagged as spam.
  • Emails to inmates go through the state's approved provider, which PA DOC lists as ViaPath (ConnectNetwork). Customer service: 1-877-650-4249.
  • Video visits are scheduled in PA DOC's Inmate Visitation System (IVS), at least two days ahead. Each person may have up to six video visits a month, including one on a weekend. Video visits are monitored and recorded.

In-person visiting

  • Schedule every visit at least two days ahead in PA DOC's Inmate Visitation System, which uses Keystone Login.
  • Each person may have up to four in-person visits a month, including one weekend visit. Visits last at least one hour, with up to four visitors.
  • Every visitor of any age is searched. There is no waiting area, so don't bring anyone who can't visit.
  • If the facility cancels a visit, you get an email at the address on your IVS account.

Becoming an approved visitor

  • You must create an IVS account and be on the person's authorized visitor list before you can schedule.
  • PA DOC does not publish a typical approval wait. Ask the facility or email ra-crdocinmatevss@pa.gov with questions.

Mail

  • Letters, cards and photos go to the state's approved mail processor, not the prison: Smart Communications/PA DOC, inmate name and number, State Correctional Institution, PO Box 33028, St. Petersburg, Florida 33733.
  • Mail is scanned and printed by the facility mailroom. Up to 25 photos per mailing; originals are destroyed after 45 days.
  • Books and publications must come from a publisher, bookstore or online seller, sent to the DOC Security Processing Center.
  • Official documents go directly to the facility. Some facilities use a separate mailing address, listed on the facility page. Allow at least a week.
