Our Promise and How We Check Facts
Our promise to families
- No lists of names. We don't publish lists of people in prison or pages about any person. No names, dates of birth or ID numbers appear in our page addresses, analytics or logs. Our only search is the Oklahoma and Nevada lookup, which shows what the Department of Corrections has published when you ask; searches are not saved and results are never indexed by search engines. For every other state we link to the state's official locator.
- No sponsors or affiliate links. No company pays us, and we earn nothing when you use a vendor. Phone, money and mail companies are named only as the state's approved provider, with a link to the official page.
- Families never pay. OutSooner is free. We don't sell data or run ads.
- Official sources only. Laws, rules, dates and facility facts come from official government sources: statutes, Department of Corrections pages and official documents. Facility status reports from families are labeled as family reports, moderated, and kept separate from official information.
How we check facts
- Sources and "Last checked" dates. Each section of our facility guides links to the official page it comes from and shows the date we last checked it. Law and data pages show their sources and a "Last verified" date.
- The 90-day banner. If a facility-guide section hasn't been checked in more than 90 days, it shows a "May be outdated" banner telling you to confirm with the official page.
- The weekly link checker. An automatic checker visits every official link used in our facility guides at least once a week. Links that fail go into a recheck queue, are re-checked daily, and are listed for us to fix.
- Report an error. Every facility-guide section has a "Report an error" link, and so does every page footer. We acknowledge error reports within 2 business days and fix or correct within 7. Report an error.
- The change log. Every material correction and addition is listed with its date in our public corrections and change log. Law pages also show a "What changed?" history.
