Pennsylvania good time and sentence credit rules

Pennsylvania has no good time. The main way to shorten a minimum is RRRI: eligible people get an RRRI minimum of three-fourths of a minimum of 3 years or less, or five-sixths of a longer minimum.[1][2]

Credit types and rates

  • RRRI minimum = 3/4 of the minimum sentence if the minimum is 3 years or less, or 5/6 if it is more than 3 years.[1]
  • Requires completing recommended programs and keeping a positive prison adjustment.[2]

Exclusions and limits

  • Generally only for less serious offenders: no personal injury crimes, sex crimes, firearm crimes, or drug-trafficking convictions under listed provisions. Certain current or prior offenses disqualify.[2]
  • The court decides RRRI eligibility at sentencing.[1]

Parole eligibility vs. discharge

  • PA sentences have a minimum and a maximum. Parole eligibility is at the minimum (or the RRRI minimum), and the Parole Board decides release. People not paroled serve to the maximum.

How to find a release date

  1. Search the official PA DOC Inmate Locator by name or ID number.
  2. Look for the projected release, parole eligibility, or discharge date. The DOC record already includes credits it has awarded.
  3. For questions, contact the facility records office. Only DOC can correct a date.
