Editorial and legal review
How OutSooner content is researched, checked and corrected today, and where we need help.
How content is made today
- Official sources only. Every rule page is built from state statutes, regulations, court rules or Department of Corrections and parole board pages. We link each claim to its source with a numbered footnote.
- Checked against the source. Plain-language summaries are checked against the official source text before they go live. Where a source was unclear or could not be fetched, the page says so.
- Real check times. The "last checked" time on each page is the time the sources were actually fetched and compared, shown in Mountain Time.
- Daily source checks. An automated job revisits official pages it is allowed to fetch (it follows each site's robots.txt). If a page changes, or a bill and a DOC policy seem to disagree, an item goes to our review queue. Nothing is published automatically.
- Plain language. We aim for an 8th-grade reading level and test pages with a Flesch-Kincaid script.
What has not happened yet
No licensed attorney has reviewed this site's content yet. OutSooner is general information, not legal advice. We do not list reviewers we don't have. When real reviewers join, we will name them here with their permission and what they reviewed.
Call for volunteer reviewers
We are looking for attorneys, public defenders, law clinics, reentry advocates and people with lived experience to review state pages for accuracy and clarity. Even one state helps.
