North Carolina state prisons: visiting, mail, money and status
53 NC DAC prisons from the official NC DAC facility list, checked 2026-10-20.
NC DAC Offender Public Information Search (official) (opens in new tab) North Carolina facility status
How to search: enter the person's legal last and first name, or their NC DAC ID number if you have it. Nicknames and misspellings usually return nothing; try fewer letters or a different spelling of the name. NC DAC calls the ID number an OPUS number; you need it to address mail.
What the dates mean: any dates shown, such as admission, sentence or projected release dates, come from NC DAC's own records. Projected dates can change (for example with earned credits, discipline or parole decisions) and are not a guarantee. Ask NC DAC or the facility before making plans around a date.
OutSooner does not store or list anyone's name, date of birth or ID number. The search runs on the official site.

- Only people on the person's approved visitor list may deposit money.
- Mailing a money order is the free option. Make it payable to TouchPay and send it with a deposit slip to: TouchPay Holdings NCDAC, PO Box 649556, Dallas, TX 75264-9556. Prisons do not accept money orders. Allow up to ten business days.

Phone calls and video visits
- Phones, tablets and kiosks are provided by the state's approved provider, which NC DAC lists as ViaPath/GTL. Tablets allow calls, text messages and scanned mail.
- To receive calls, set up a prepaid AdvancePay account tied to your phone number through ConnectNetwork, online, by app, or at 1-800-483-8314. You can also add money to the person's own PIN debit phone account.
- Video visits use the Getting Out Visits app or a computer with a webcam, and are only for people on the approved visitor list.

In-person visiting
- In-person visits are by appointment only. Call or email the prison to schedule, and call the day before to confirm the facility's visiting status.
- Visitors 16 and older are pat-searched and scanned. Refusing a search means you can't enter. Cell phones are not allowed. Dress rules apply.
- Questions about visiting policy (D.0200) go to the warden of that prison.

Becoming an approved visitor
- You must have an approved application before any visit. The incarcerated person mails you a blank application; you return the completed original to the prison where they are housed.
- Attach a copy of an approved photo ID (16 and older) or a birth certificate (under 16). Incomplete or copied forms are not approved.
- Each person can have up to 18 approved visitors. Once the list is full, it can only change during an open-enrollment period every six months.
- A criminal record, recent release or current probation/parole may be grounds for denial; exceptions may apply for immediate family. NC DAC does not publish a typical approval wait time.

- Personal mail goes to the state's approved mail processor, which NC DAC lists as TextBehind. It is scanned and delivered to the person's tablet.
- Address it exactly: name and OPUS number, full prison name (no abbreviations), P.O. Box 247, Phoenix, MD 21131. Mail addressed any other way is returned.
- Your return address must include your full first and last name; initials are returned.
- Pre-approved religious correspondence course materials go directly to the prison, not to TextBehind.
