Minnesota state prisons: visiting, mail, money and status

11 Minnesota DOC prisons from the official Minnesota DOC facility list, checked 2026-10-20.

Minnesota DOC incarcerated person search (official) (opens in new tab) Minnesota facility status

How to search: enter the person's legal last and first name, or their Minnesota DOC ID number if you have it. Nicknames and misspellings usually return nothing; try fewer letters or a different spelling of the name. Use it to confirm the person's name as DOC lists it, their OID number and current facility. Mail and deposits need the OID number.

What the dates mean: any dates shown, such as admission, sentence or projected release dates, come from Minnesota DOC's own records. Projected dates can change (for example with earned credits, discipline or parole decisions) and are not a guarantee. Ask Minnesota DOC or the facility before making plans around a date.

OutSooner does not store or list anyone's name, date of birth or ID number. The search runs on the official site.

  • Notices come by email and/or U.S. mail. Phone calls are used only for escapes. Notices include transfers, 60-day notice of release, release and supervision changes.

Phone calls and video visits

  • Only the person in custody can place calls, at set times. Minnesota DOC calls from an incarcerated person are free; three-way and forwarded calls aren't allowed.
  • Calls are monitored or recorded. Paid video visits are scheduled through JPay and require being on the approved visitor list.
  • In an emergency (death, serious illness or injury), call the facility and leave a message; staff will verify it and pass it on.

Fees change. Check the official Minnesota DOC page (opens in new tab) for current fees before you pay.

Becoming an approved visitor

  • You must be added to the person's approved visitor list by completing a Visiting Privilege Application. Fill it out completely and honestly.
  • A background check is done, but a criminal record or probation doesn't automatically mean denial. Wait for approval before visiting.

Mail

  • Mail is opened and scanned, and the person receives a copy. It first goes to a service outside Minnesota.
  • Address it with the person's full name and OID number, the facility name and "Minnesota" (not abbreviated), then the scanning-service P.O. box for that facility shown on the DOC mail page (Phoenix, MD). Letters, photos and cards can also be sent electronically through TextBehind.
