Washington prison money & phone fees, compared

What it costs to send money and take calls from DOC (Washington), using only fees DOC (Washington) publishes, each with its source and date. Where a fee isn't published, we say so; we never guess.

Sending money

Options DOC (Washington) names: Securus (approved provider) (opens in new tab), Western Union (approved provider) (opens in new tab)

Official fees and rates

  • DOC lists Western Union fees from $5.95 (up to $30) to $9.95 ($200.01 to $5,000). DOC calls a mailed money order or cashier's check the least expensive option, but it can post more slowly.
Other official notes
  • WA DOC accepts deposits three ways: Securus Debit, Western Union (online, phone or in person; City Code WA DOC, account number is the DOC number plus last name), or a cashier's check or money order by mail.
  • Deposits are subject to mandatory deductions under RCW 72.09.480 unless marked for an exempt use such as postage. You may not deposit to more than one person's account without the superintendent's approval.

Phone calls, video and messages

Options DOC (Washington) names: Securus (approved provider) (opens in new tab)

Official fees and rates

Not published on the official DOC (Washington) page we read. Vendors show their fee before you pay; check it there.

Other official notes
  • WA DOC contracts with Securus Technologies for phone calls. There is no application to receive calls, and you don't need the person's PIN to fund a phone account.
  • Video visits are also through Securus. You must be on the approved visitor list, and visits are booked at least 24 hours ahead in 30-minute blocks. All calls and video visits are recorded.

Ways to keep costs down

  • If DOC (Washington) lists a free option (often a mailed money order), it says so above.
  • Fees often step up with the amount; a vendor's checkout screen shows the exact fee before you pay.
  • Compare states: all states side by side.
