34 VADOC prisons from the official VADOC facility list, checked 2026-10-20.

Addresses are the street addresses in VADOC's Facilities Directory; some facilities list a separate P.O. box for mail there. Use the directory's mailing address when one is shown.
How to search: enter the person's legal last and first name, or their VADOC ID number if you have it. Nicknames and misspellings usually return nothing; try fewer letters or a different spelling of the name. The 7-digit state ID number appears in the second column of the search results; you need it for mail, deposits and phone accounts.
What the dates mean: any dates shown, such as admission, sentence or projected release dates, come from VADOC's own records. Projected dates can change (for example with earned credits, discipline or parole decisions) and are not a guarantee. Ask VADOC or the facility before making plans around a date.
OutSooner does not store or list anyone's name, date of birth or ID number. The search runs on the official site.
How to get release and transfer alerts
Virginia NAAVI portal (official) (opens in new tab)
- VADOC uses NAAVI, which is not connected to VINE at local jails. Register on the NAAVI website (English or Spanish). For help, call 1-800-560-4292.
- Notices cover transfers, advance release (usually 30 days ahead), release, death, name change, work release, escape, recapture and parole interviews and decisions.
- To stop notices, write to victimservices@vadoc.virginia.gov. For local jails, register with VINE separately.

Sending money
- Deposits go through the state's approved provider, which VADOC lists as JPay: online, by app, by phone at 1 (800) 574-5729, or with cash at MoneyGram locations. You need the 7-digit ID number.
- Money orders go with a deposit slip to JPay, P.O. Box 278170, Miramar, FL 33027 (about three business days). Don't mail money to facilities; it is rejected.
- Part of a deposit may go to fines, costs or restitution. You can't send money to more than one person without prior approval.
Fees change. Check the official VADOC page (opens in new tab) for current fees before you pay.

Phone calls and video visits
- Phone service is from the state's approved provider, which VADOC lists as ViaPath/GTL (ConnectNetwork). Each person can call up to 15 numbers on their list, including cell phones.
- Calls are limited to 20 minutes and are recorded. Set up an AdvancePay prepaid account at ConnectNetwork or 1 (800) 483-8314, or add money to the person's PIN debit account.
- Video visits are scheduled through ViaPath's VADOC site.

In-person visiting
- Prisons typically allow visiting on Saturdays, Sundays and state holidays, but rules vary and can change; contact the facility before you go and check VADOC's visitation updates.
- Once approved, schedule visits online with VADOC's Visitation Scheduler.
- Minors must come with a parent, guardian or approved adult. An adult who isn't the parent or guardian must bring a notarized statement or court order every time.

Becoming an approved visitor
- Apply online (about 20-30 minutes, in one sitting). You need the person's name or ID number, a photo ID and your Social Security number. Add children to an adult's application.
- VADOC says processing takes about 45 days for Virginia residents and 90 days for out-of-state residents.
- Since June 2023 you no longer need to be on the person's visiting list. You may visit only one person who isn't immediate family. Approvals expire after three years; renew 45 days ahead (90 out of state).

- Don't send money orders, cash, checks, stamps or prepaid envelopes.
- Rules differ for people held in local or regional jails; contact that jail.
