All official mail rules we have for Rhode Island
- Use a white envelope (colored envelopes aren't allowed) and the facility's inmate mail P.O. box in Cranston. Include a return address. No stamps, and don't mail money; it's taken and deposited. (official source) (opens in new tab)
- There's no limit on letters. Incoming non-legal mail may be opened, inspected and read. (official source) (opens in new tab)
- All mail (letters, packages, etc.) is only accepted when arriving through the U.S. (official source) (opens in new tab)
- Packages arriving from any other source are not accepted. (official source) (opens in new tab)
- Effective October 1, 2012 , per policy, all incoming mail for inmates must be in a white envelope, with the exception of manila envelopes from attorneys. (official source) (opens in new tab)
- Inmates must purchase postage stamps through the inmate commissary. (official source) (opens in new tab)
Write the person's name and ID number only on the envelope; this page never asks for them. Rules change and can differ by prison; the prison's posted rules win. Not legal advice. No sponsors or affiliate links. Last checked .
