Michigan prison mail & photo rules checker
Tick what you plan to send and see MDOC's official rules for it before it gets rejected. Pick a prison for its mailing address.
All official mail rules we have for Michigan
- Send USPS mail to the facility address with the person's name and prisoner number (for example: John A. Smith, #123456, then the facility address). (official source) (opens in new tab)
- Personal mail is photocopied in black and white; the person gets the copy and originals are shredded. (official source) (opens in new tab)
- Email goes through the state's approved provider, which MDOC lists as JPay. Messages are screened and read on a housing-unit kiosk. (official source) (opens in new tab)
- Books must be new and shipped directly from an MDOC-approved vendor. Hard-cover books are not allowed from Feb. 9, 2026. (official source) (opens in new tab)
Write the person's name and ID number only on the envelope; this page never asks for them. Rules change and can differ by prison; the prison's posted rules win. Not legal advice. No sponsors or affiliate links. Last checked .
