Visit-day checklist: Massachusetts prisons
What to wear, which ID to bring and what you can carry in, from Massachusetts DOC's official rules. Pick a prison to add its address, phone and hours. Print it or keep it on your phone.
Before visit day
- ☐ The person must add you to their pre-approved visiting list. Fill out the DOC Visitor Application and mail it to the prison you plan to visit. (official source) (opens in new tab)
- ☐ You and the person will be notified of approval or denial. (official source) (opens in new tab)
- ☐ Check for lockdowns or cancelled visits: Massachusetts facility status.
What to wear
- ☐ Review the Visitor Dress Code and allowable items list before you go (linked from the official page). (official source) (opens in new tab)
ID to bring
- ☐ You must have a valid photo ID: a state driver’s license, passport, military ID, or an official photo ID card from any state or federal agency. (official source) (opens in new tab)
- ☐ Children under 18 must be with a parent or legal guardian who is on the approved list; bring an original or copy of the child’s birth certificate or official hospital birth record. (official source) (opens in new tab)
What you can bring, what stays in the car
- ☐ Visitors who need life-saving medication or medical devices must get the Superintendent’s approval in advance and show it each visit. (official source) (opens in new tab)
- ☐ Everyone entering may be checked by a drug-detection dog; refusing a search means you will not be allowed to visit. (official source) (opens in new tab)
More from Massachusetts DOC on visiting
- ☐ Visiting hours vary by prison and are on the DOC Locations page; call ahead, especially around holidays. Some prisons (for example MCI-Norfolk, MCI-Shirley and Souza-Baranowski) require booking at least 24 hours ahead by phone. (official source) (opens in new tab)
- ☐ Bring valid photo ID (driver's license, passport, military ID or a government photo ID) and review the dress code and allowed-items list first. (official source) (opens in new tab)
