First: this is civil detention

ICE detention is civil, not a criminal sentence. There is no sentence to serve, so there are no sentence credits (good time) and no release date to calculate. Release depends on the immigration case: a bond, an immigration judge's decision, or an ICE decision.

There is no right to a free lawyer in immigration court. The law allows a lawyer "at no expense to the Government" (8 U.S.C. 1362 (opens in new tab)). Look for free or low-cost help on the EOIR list of pro bono providers (opens in new tab) and from accredited representatives (opens in new tab).

Watch for scams: a "notario" is not a lawyer in the U.S. Don't pay anyone who promises results. How to spot a scam.

Visiting hours and rules

From the official ICE page, checked 2026-10-21. Rules change; confirm with the facility.

Detainees in the detention facility are allowed non-contact visitation.

In-person visitation is available Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Remote visitation is available from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The number of visitors per visit is limited to two, which includes children. A federally or state issued photo identification is required prior to visitation (state issued driver’s license, state issued identification card, military identification card or passport). All visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a biological parent and the minor’s birth certificate (the novelty type issued by a hospital is acceptable). If the visitor is a minor spouse of a detainee, they must provide the proof of marriage AND a proper photo identification.

No visits are allowed if you have a current protection order and/or a no-contact order with the detainee. You will be subject to arrest if you visit with a detainee with a protection/no-contact order.

All visitors are subject to search prior to entering the visitation area. The visit can be monitored or recorded at any time.

All visitors, including attorneys and official visitors, must be fully dressed in appropriate conventional clothing, which is not unduly provocative, suggestive, or revealing and does not resemble offender attire or present adornments which could be used as a weapon. Visitor clothing standards include:

No controversial/objectionable gang, obscene, drug and alcohol designs, messages or profanity on clothing.

Shoes are required.

Visitors are not to wear any garment which unduly exposes the shoulders, chest, back, stomach, midriff, and/or underarm. Necklines must be within two inches of the notch of the neck.

Clothing made of sheer, transparent, net or mesh materials are not allowed.

Clothing designed or intended to be tightly worn and excessively accent the body, e.g., spandex, tights, leggings, tank tops, etc., is not allowed.

Appropriate undergarments are required but should not be visible.

Dresses, skirts, jumpers, culottes, and shorts shall not be worn if more than six (6) inches above the kneecap when seated. Slit dresses/skirts shall be allowed only if the slit is not more than six (6) inches above the kneecap while standing. Wrap-around clothing will not be allowed.

Visitors are not to wear hats in the visiting area, except religious hats or headgear. Gloves, scarves, or outer garments, such as topcoats, raincoats, jackets, and similar inclement weather attire will not be permitted within the visiting area.

No offensive, loud or disruptive language will be allowed. Unacceptable conduct will cause your visit to be terminated immediately and may prevent you from scheduling future visits. Visitors must arrive 10 minutes prior to scheduled visitation.

Attorneys are required to possess and may be required to show their bar card or acceptable proof of profession prior to admission.

Computer terminal kiosks have been placed in the detention facility for use by detainees to facilitate several tasks, among which are secure email, electronic law library, commissary order placement and intra-facility detainee coordination with staff. The email application is available for use by the detainee and their friends and family at a nominal cost per email. Please go to jailatm.com to sign up and start e-mailing the detainee today.

Please note contact with the detainee via e-mail requires prior approval by facility staff.

Consular Visits

Consular officials may meet with their detained nationals at any time. It is requested that prior arrangements be made with the ICE Supervisory Deportation Officer to the extent possible, and that consular officials bring appropriate credentials when they come to the facility. The ICE Supervisory Deportation Officer for this facility can be reached at (612) 843-8600.

Clergy Visits

Clergy may be allowed to visit at reasonable hours as long as security and daily routine are not interrupted. Clergy are required to register prior to each visit.

You may always call ahead to reserve time to speak with a detainee to ensure prompt attention.

Visiting Restrictions

All family or other social visits are non-contact.

No firearms or weapons of any kind are permitted in the facility.

If visitors are or appear to be intoxicated, visitation will not be allowed.

All visitors are subject to search while in the facility.

Visitors are not allowed to pass or attempt to pass any items to detainees.

Visitors are not allowed to carry any items into the visitation area.

Search Procedures (prior to or during all visitations)

All individuals requesting admittance to the facility or the visitation area are subject to a pat-down search of their person, an inspection of their belongings, and a metal scan search. Individuals refusing to cooperate with a reasonable search will not be admitted. No firearms or weapons of any kind are permitted. No electronic devices (cell phones, pagers, radios, etc.) are permitted in the secure areas of this facility.

Money, mail and sending items

From the official ICE page, checked 2026-10-21. Rules change; confirm with the facility.

At any time during a detainee’s stay, family and friends may deposit funds into the detainee’s commissary account. These funds must be in the form of cash or money order, if being deposited at the detention center. Sending cash through the mail is highly discouraged. Funds may be placed into a detainee’s account via the internet at jailatm.com or via a kiosk in the lobby of the detention facility.

Letters sent to detainees must include the last four digits of the detainee’s A-number, plus the sender’s name and address. To enhance the safety of the facility, all incoming mail is subject to screening for contraband. The mail is not read upon opening, only inspected by the delivering officer. Detainees may send mail from the facility. Detainees may seal their outgoing letters and place them in the provided receptacle. All incoming mail will be delivered to the detainee, and outgoing mail will be routed to the proper postal office within 24 hours of receipt by facility staff. A mail pick-up and delivery schedule is posted in all housing units.

Detainees are allowed to purchase stamps for use. Generally, there is no limit to the amount of correspondence detainees may send at their own expense. Indigent detainees (those who have no means of financial support and no funds in their facility account) will be provided postage allowance at government expense.

When detainees depart the facility or are transferred to another facility, only their legal mail will be forwarded to them. General correspondence will be endorsed "Return to Sender" and returned to the post office.

A detainee may receive items that are determined to be of necessity for the sole purpose of travel or release from agency custody with approval of the ICE Deportation Officer. Before sending packages to detainees, call (612) 843-8600.

Note that detainees being removed from the United States are allowed one small piece of luggage. If a detainee does not have such baggage, such luggage can be sent/delivered after receiving approval from Supervisory Deportation Officer. Please be advised that for security reasons, no electronic devices (cell phones, electric razors, laptop computers, radios, etc.) will be accepted.
