Oregon good time and sentence credit rules

For felonies on or after Nov 1, 1989, Oregon allows earned time of up to 20% of the prison term, for good institutional behavior and adult basic skills programs.[1]

Credit types and rates

  • Credits are earned for appropriate institutional behavior (defined by DOC rule) and for taking part in the adult basic skills program.[1]
  • Cap: 20% of the total term in a DOC institution.[1]
  • Credits cannot cut actual prison time below 6 months.[1]

Exclusions and limits

  • Not available for sentences under ORS 137.635, 137.700 and 137.707 (Measure 11 mandatory minimums) or 163.105, 163.107 and 163.115 (murder).[1]

Parole eligibility vs. discharge

  • Earned time shortens the term of incarceration, which moves up release to post-prison supervision.[1]

How to find a release date

  1. Search the official Oregon DOC Offender Search by name or ID number.
  2. Look for the projected release, parole eligibility, or discharge date. The DOC record already includes credits it has awarded.
  3. For questions, contact the facility records office. Only DOC can correct a date.
