District of Columbia good time and sentence credit rules

People sentenced under D.C. Code §24-403.01 get good time only as provided in the federal statute, 18 U.S.C. §3624(b). D.C. felony prisoners serve their time in the federal Bureau of Prisons.[1]

Credit types and rates

  • Good time credit is available "only as provided in 18 U.S.C. §3624(b)." That is the federal good conduct time of up to 54 days per year of the sentence imposed.[1]
  • People with nonviolent offenses can get up to a 1-year reduction for completing a substance abuse treatment program under 18 U.S.C. §3621(e)(2).[1]

Exclusions and limits

  • The 1-year treatment reduction is not available for a "crime of violence" as defined in D.C. law.[1]
  • The federal First Step Act time credits (18 U.S.C. §3632) apply to federal-code convictions. Whether they apply to D.C. Code offenders depends on BOP policy, so check with BOP.

Parole eligibility vs. discharge

  • Sentences under §24-403.01 are determinate, followed by supervised release. Older D.C. sentences may still be parole-eligible before the U.S. Parole Commission.

How to find a release date

  1. Search the official BOP Inmate Locator by name or ID number.
  2. Look for the projected release, parole eligibility, or discharge date. The DOC record already includes credits it has awarded.
  3. For questions, contact the facility records office. Only DOC can correct a date.
