Alaska good time and sentence credit rules

Alaska gives a good-time deduction of one-third of the term to prisoners who follow facility rules, with listed exceptions.[1]

Credit types and rates

  • For sentences over 3 days, a person is entitled to a deduction of one-third of the term, rounded to the nearest day, if they follow the rules of the facility where they are held.[1]
  • No good time for time spent in a treatment program, in a private residence, or on electronic monitoring.[1]

Exclusions and limits

  • Mandatory 99-year terms under AS 12.55.125(a) imposed after June 27, 1996.[1]
  • Definite terms under AS 12.55.125(l).[1]
  • Sexual felonies under AS 12.55.125(i) where the person has a prior sexual felony, or where the offense is an unclassified or class A felony.[1]
  • Unclassified felonies under AS 11.41.100 or 11.41.110 (murder in the first or second degree).[1]

Parole eligibility vs. discharge

  • Good time shortens time in custody. People released on good time may be placed on mandatory parole for the deducted time. We have not yet confirmed those terms in statute text, so ask the Alaska Board of Parole about a specific case.

How to find a release date

  1. Search the official Alaska DOC VINELink offender search by name or ID number.
  2. Look for the projected release, parole eligibility, or discharge date. The DOC record already includes credits it has awarded.
  3. For questions, contact the facility records office. Only DOC can correct a date.
