Nevada SB 413: what it does and when it starts
Nevada SB 413 (2023) creates a new way to earn credit: eligible people who follow their assigned programming can earn credit equal to 35% of both their minimum and maximum sentences. Its start date has been delayed twice and is now July 1, 2027.
What changes
- Credit equal to 35% of the minimum and maximum sentence for eligible people who comply with programming.
- Excludes violent crimes, sex offenses, certain DUIs, and Category A and B felonies.
- Applies to crimes committed on or after the start date; people sentenced earlier may elect the new method.
- AB 542 (2025) added up to 90 days a year of meritorious credit and requires a written projection before someone elects.
- AB 4 (2025 special session) moved the start date to July 1, 2027 and requires NDOC to compute credits for people within two years of their expiration date.
- The 2027 legislative session begins in February 2027 and could change it again.
How credits are figured (general)
- Find the minimum and maximum terms and the sentence start date (NDOC data shows these).
- Check exclusions: violent, sex, certain DUI, Category A/B felonies.
- Estimated parole eligibility = start + 65% of the minimum; estimated expiration = start + 65% of the maximum.
- Add meritorious credit (up to 90 days a year) only if awarded.
- Compare with the official NDOC dates, which already include current good-time credits.
- Ask NDOC for the written projection before electing.
